A steady DEF lamp on a Cummins EPA 2010 engine means the Diesel Exhaust Fluid level is low, and a flashing DEF lamp means the level has dropped below the critical point. Both are corrected by refilling the DEF tank — that is the first and cheapest thing to rule out before anyone starts chasing a fault.

Cummins EPA2010 Driver Tips for the XPI Fuel System
The ISX XPI system runs extreme rail pressure: up to 2600 Bar (37,709 PSI) at 1800 RPM and above. Two things follow from that number.
First, the mechanical dump valve on the rail is a two-stage device that exists to stop overpressure. If pressure reaches the limit it opens immediately and brings the system back down to a limp-home pressure, which is why a truck can suddenly feel gutless and still drive. Do not treat a sudden power drop as a nuisance — it is the system protecting itself.
Second, and this one is not negotiable: before any work on the fuel system, the line from the pump to the rail must be loosened to release pressure. Fuel spray at these pressures penetrates skin and causes serious injury or death. No shortcut on this, no matter who is waiting on the truck.
