Nine times out of ten the real question is not about the plumbing at all. It is: the dash is lit, the engine is pulling power, and I have a load to move. The EGR valve, cooler and the sensors around them are monitored by the ECM, and when a monitored value goes out of range the ECM logs the fault and then acts on it — that action is the derate, and the derate is what the driver notices.
That distinction matters, because the thing that is hurting the driver is the ECM's reaction, and the ECM's reaction is calibration. The hardware fault still has to be fixed. What can be changed is what the engine does about it between now and the repair.
The three jobs that keep a derating truck working

Temporary DTC blocking. A nuisance code that keeps pulling the engine into derate can be blocked temporarily so the truck keeps moving while the real repair is booked and the parts are in transit. Temporary is the operative word: the underlying fault is still there, the sensor or valve still needs attention, and this does not replace the repair.
Derate and road-speed-limit calibration. Instead of the truck sitting on the shoulder, the derate behaviour and speed limit are calibrated so it can reach the shop or finish the run. This changes what the engine does when it derates, not whether the fault exists.
Regen behaviour. Parked and forced regen thresholds, how often the cycle runs, and what the ECM does with a cycle that will not complete. If your complaint is a truck that wants to regen constantly or never finishes one, this is the area to look at.
Results depend on the condition of the engine. Nothing here is sold as a permanent fix for a mechanical fault.
