WHY DPF DELETE?

The diesel particulate filter is a standard component on diesel engine vehicles, as it works to capture soot and exhaust contaminants before they can be emitted into the environment. While the DPF might seem like a good thing, most vehicles experience a variety of issues with this component. The issues are mainly associated with the DPF’s cleaning process, which is known as “regeneration.” Specifically, regeneration occurs at elevated temperatures when the soot and exhaust contaminants that are trapped in the filter are essentially burned out of it. However, regeneration often takes place every 300 miles or so, and it only occurs when vehicles are traveling consistently at speeds of more than 45 miles per hour. Regeneration can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to take place, making it difficult for vehicles that mostly operate in stop-and-go environments to maintain higher speeds for elongated periods of time. When regeneration isn’t working properly, it can lead to problems with the DPF itself as well as problems with the diesel engine. For this reason, most diesel operators and fleet managers choose just to have the DPF deleted.

As if eliminating the hassle of the DPF wasn’t already enough of a benefit, there are a few other key benefits to deleting the DPF. These include:

Better fuel economy: The DPF requires fuel in order for regeneration to take place, hence eliminating the DPF will also eliminate excessive fuel use. This can thereby lead to a savings in fuel economy.

Better engine performance: The DPF also restricts engine performance, which can be another key motivator to have the delete service performed. A noticable and immediate improvement in throttle is often seen after a DPF delete.
