Cummins Fault Code 3868 (SPN 3364 FMI 9) on B6.7 CM2350: What It Means and How to Chase It
Cummins fault code 3868 (SPN 3364, FMI 9/9) on a B6.7 CM2350 means the DEF quality sensor has gone a period of time without producing a concentration value, and the ECM has lost communication with it over the J1939 data link. It lights the amber lamp and brings a power derate with it.
The trap is the name. It says DEF quality sensor, so the sensor gets replaced, and the code comes back — because on the Cummins troubleshooting list the sensor is the last item, not the first.
Why this code is not usually a sensor
The DEF quality sensor on this engine is a smart device. It does not run off the ECM: it takes power and ground straight from the battery, runs its own internal diagnostics, and reports over the SAE J1939 data link to the primary engine ECM. Its only job is measuring the concentration of the DEF in the tank.
That wiring arrangement is why 3868 points at three separate systems at once:
- Battery and grounds
- The aftertreatment power supply circuit
- The J1939 backbone itself
The Cummins Shoptalk cause list is ordered the same way, and it is worth reading in that order: battery condition first, then the terminals and cable ends, then the fuse feeding the aftertreatment circuit, then the aftertreatment power relay, then the OEM harness, then the engine harness, then the terminating resistors, then anything else hanging off the J1939 network — and the DEF quality sensor itself dead last.
Where the sensor sits
Normally in the DEF tank, or in-line with the supply line to the DEF dosing unit. Exact location changes with the chassis, so confirm against the OEM service manual rather than the engine manual.
Diagnostic order for Cummins fault code 3868
Work the Cummins solution set in sequence. Skipping to the sensor is the classic way to spend a part and still own the fault:
- Battery voltage — load test the batteries, then inspect the grounds. Low or unstable supply to a battery-powered smart sensor produces exactly this symptom.
- DEF quality sensor supply voltage — checked at the aftertreatment power relay, including a resistance check of the relay, and then the sensor circuit itself.
- J1939 data link — terminating resistance and the condition of the backbone. Two terminating resistors on a healthy backbone; measure the resistance across the network and compare it against the value in the Cummins procedure for this engine before condemning anything.
- Harness inspection, OEM and engine side, on the way through.
- The DEF quality sensor last.
Battery and ground work comes before harness work, and harness work comes before parts. A dirty battery post or a corroded chassis ground can drop a smart sensor off the data link without setting anything more obvious.
Clearing and validating the repair
This one does not clear with the Cummins electronic service tool. To validate the fix, start the engine and let it idle up to five minutes; the ECM shuts the amber lamp off immediately once the diagnostic has run and passed.

While you are connected, note which ECM code and calibration revision the engine is running, then look that revision up in Cummins' calibration history — if a later release addresses this fault, that is cheaper than another hour in the harness.
