Customers usually describe their truck by engine: "it's an X15". That is a good start, but the number we actually need is the ECM family — the CM number.
What the CM number is
It identifies the control module hardware and the software platform that runs on it. Roughly, each generation of Cummins electronics got a new CM designation, and they line up with emissions eras:

Treat that table as a map, not a specification. Overlap exists, mid-year changes exist, and a truck that has been through a repower may not carry what the year suggests.
Why the ECM matters more than the engine model
Two X15s from different years can carry different ECM families. The calibration files, the diagnostic software that talks to them, and the procedures are all tied to the ECM, not to the badge on the valve cover.
This is why a job quoted against "X15" and a job quoted against "X15 CM2350" are not the same job. When you send us the ESN, the first thing we establish is which family we are dealing with.
The suffix codes
You will also see codes like BEF, BKR, BAF, BGV attached to listings. Those identify a specific calibration family within an ECM platform — a particular combination of engine rating, aftertreatment configuration and market.
They are the difference between "an X15 file" and "the right X15 file", and they are readable from the ECM.
How to find out what you have
- Diagnostic software will report the ECM code and calibration directly. This is the reliable answer.
- The engine dataplate gives you the ESN, which we can look up.
- The ECM itself carries a part number on its own label, though it is not always the easiest thing to reach.

One thing worth saying plainly
An ECM part number cannot be derived from a VIN or an ESN with certainty. Databases give a strong indication, and we use them — but the definitive answer comes from reading the module. That is why we confirm during the session rather than promising up front.
